Monthly Newsletter for May 2010
Volume 5, Issue 05
Why are we, and by "we" I mean all of us at Post 130, members of this organization? Even though I cannot answer this question for everyone, I would like to express some of my answers that probably will fit with some of your own.
Friendship is top on my list. We all have our own personal likes and dislikes, but for the most part we agree and enjoy sharing one another's company.
Charity. The way I see it when you get a bunch of people together, working for free, to support, clean, maintain four walls and a roof, now that's charity.
Respect. At every meeting, event, or ceremony we start with prayer and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. We show our respect with our commitment to each other and our country. We are part of an organization that fills our hearts and minds with feelings that only comes from knowing that we make a difference.
For God and Country
Tony Alvarez, Commander Post 130
April has been a good month for our Post, that included good weather for the Easter holiday. My congratulations to the Post 130 Riders for the great annual Poker Run, not only a great ride but another fantastic weather day. We enjoyed a really good turnout for the District 13 meeting. Thanks to the efforts of our kitchen volunteers and the chef, Ray Martin, all at the District 13 meeting enjoyed a tasty turkey dinner. May is when we begin monthly Fish Fry. These will take place on the first Friday of each month. Breakfast will now be on the first Sunday of every month.
Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day both take place this month, a time to honor those that gave so much to make sure we could keep the freedoms that we enjoy every day. We as veterans should take time to honor those that have served and those that are now serving to ensure that our freedoms continue to be the envy of all nations. God bless the founders of our great nation.
Please remember that Post elections for new officers will be held on May 20th at the next general meeting. Anyone interested in holding office should contact the Post Adjutant.
For God and Country,
Carl Pretz, Adjutant.

Greetings,
Spring has Sprung! It's getting quieter here and we are missing our snowbird friends already. April was very busy finalizing our year-end reports.
We had a terrific time making breakfast for approximately 120 Labelle Elementary Honor Students and we educated them on veterans, poppies, flags and the Medal of Honor on display in the hall. It is so wonderful to see so many smart and interested kids here in LaBelle.
We have our brunch buffet on May 2nd from 10am-1pm. We will be attempting to have our rummage sale again this month, weather permitting! Keep an eye on the calendar for the date.
I would like to thank everyone who has helped with the honor breakfast, brunch, dinners, and canteen. I'd also like to thank all those who have donated their time and treasures for the rummage sale
Don't forget that elections for our new officers takes place on May 20th, we would love to see everyone there. Our Department Convention takes place next month, June 24-27 in Orlando, Florida.
God bless the USA.
Sincerely,
Candy Alvarez
President Unit 130
Summer will soon be upon us. Hope you enjoy Spring while it lasts.
Cinco de Mayo is the 1st Wednesday in May. We will have food, a 50/50 drawing and our happy hour from 4 to 6pm.
Happy Mother's Day to the ladies on May 9th.
Armed forces day is the 15th of May and Memorial Day is the 31st of May. Please remember all of our veterans for all they have done for God and Country.
The monthly jam session is the 16th of May at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to bring their instruments and play along. Hope all will come and enjoy the music.
Thanks again to everyone for supporting the Post and lounge.

I'm very pleased to report that the Chapter 130 Poker Run was a smashing success. Our Chapter has voted to donate the $1,500 raised during our poker run to three worthy causes: The American Legion Legacy Scholarship, the Child Welfare Foundation and a fund which is being created at Post 130 to help transient veterans in need. Once again, I find myself overwhelmingly proud of the works we do at Post 130 and I'm so very pleased that our Chapter is so involved in Post programs.
The Military Heritage Museum in Punta Gorda is having a Poker Run on 22 May 2010. Our Chapter has expressed a desire to have a presence and I hope that many members will attend. Please check the bulletin board for information as that date approaches.
As this is May, we are preparing for elections of new officers. Voting on the slate of officers will take place at the next regular meeting of the American Legion Riders, Chapter 130 on 26th of the month at 7pm. I urge all members to attend. Anyone who wishes to hold an office for the 2010-2011 year is encouraged to be present, as nominations from the floor will be readily accepted.
For God and Country,
Ray 'Bouncer' Leventhal, Director

We wish all our winter/summer travelers a safe journey home. Already looking forward to your return in the Fall. You are a big part of the support and volunteers of this Post and we would not be as successful without you returning every year.
God Bless
Craig Bartoshuk, 2nd Vice Commander
Squadron 130
Hello everyone,
May is upon us and some neat things are happening in LaBelle. Our Honor Guard will Post the Colors for the opening event at the Relay for Life being held at LaBelle High School, Saturday May 1st at 1:00 PM. Also our Legion Riders have the honor of taking the first lap around the track. It makes me proud to see how our Post stays involved and supports community events.
Sam Renfro, Post Chaplain
The DAV's Hendry County Veterans transportation program is designed to assist veterans with their travel needs to VA Medical Facilities. Veterans utilizing the service must be capable of boarding and departing the van without the driver/s aid. If you would like to utilize the DAV Van Program, please make arrangements in advance by calling DAV Chapter 144 in Labelle Florida (863) 612-0300 Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 7:00pm or 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Sundays.
Etch your name in LaBelle History. The LaBelle Veteran's Memorial Park needs your support. Custom engraved bricks are available — Brick order forms are available at the Post, or you can download one from http://www.legionpost130.org/brick.pdf. Stop by the Post for more information.
